KOA

Common tree of dry & mesic forests.  Attains height of 100 feet but usually much less.  True pinnately-compound leaflets are seen on young trees.  The dominant sickle-shaped 'leaves' called phyllodes are derived from leaf stems (petioles).  Koa's durable, attractive wood is versatile and highly-prized.  The rare Koai'a Acacia koaia is a small tree with shorter, straighter phyllodes.  Endemic to Hawaii.
