Uncommon endemic shrub or small tree of mesic forests on Oahu, with a few records from Moloka'i to Hawaii.  Stiff leaves have thick raised edges.  Wood is extremely soft & light.  Leaf internodes 1 - 4mm, stems 2 - 6mm just below the apical bud.  Charpentiera obovata has leaf internodes 3 - 10mm, stems 1 - 2mm below apical bud.
